Traumatic brain injury (TBI), bring more than 1.5 million people to hospitals every year in the United States and more than 20,000 in the State of Washington alone.

The leading causes of TBI are motor vehicle accidents, falls, and sports injuries.

The brain is subject to traumatic injury in two ways. First, the cerebral cortex can be bruised, when a hard object strikes the head or the head strikes a hard object, which is sometimes called a contusion. Second, the deep white matter in a person's brain can suffer diffuse axonal injury from a whiplash without being hit by a hard object or hitting one. In very serious whiplash injuries, the axons, long, slender nerve fibers, or neurons, which conduct electrical impulses in the brain, are stretched so much they are damaged.

TBI can result in a multitude of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social effects. Symptoms may include:

• Physical:
  Paralysis, Hearing, Vision, Headaches, Speech impediments, Seizures, Muscle Spasticity, Reduced Endurance, Loss of Consciousness.

• Cognitive Impairments:
  Communication, Writing Skills, Attention, Concentration, Perceptions, Planning, Short and/or Long Term Memory, Judgment, Reading Skills, Sequencing, Orientation.

• Behavioral / Emotional Changes:
  Agitation, Restlessness, Fatigue, Anxiety, Mood Swings, Low Self-Esteem, Excessive Emotions, Depression, Self-Centeredness, Sexual Dysfunction, Lack of Motivation, Inability to Cope.

The outcome can be complete recovery, temporary or permanent disability, or death. The degree of recovery from a brain injury can vary a great deal, even between patients with similar injuries. The majority of patients recover from brain injuries within the first six months to a year after the trauma, but in severe cases a patient's symptoms may continue to improve for as long as ten years post injury.
