Seattle is the largest and most populated city in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest with a population of around 594,210 according to the 2007 census. It is also the major economic, educational and cultural hub for the region. It is the county seat of King County. Aptly named "The Emerald City" it lies on the Puget Sound and the Port of Seattle is a major sea port on the West Coast. Located between the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, the city is hilly in nature with a lush evergreen setting. While urban in nature, it has a lot of recreation and is but an hour or two drives from national parks, skiing and other recreational pursuits. The city has a wet but mild climate with very wet winters and a dry period in the summer that lasts approximately six weeks.

The city was founded by Chief Sealth of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes and incorporated in 1869. The industries of the city have changed throughout its history. From timber, ship building, aircraft and now software and coffee, the city boasts a highly educated and well-read population. The city supports an orchestra, a ballet company, an opera, and nearly 30 professional theaters and seven schools of theater. It was also the center of the grunge alternative rock movement.

Location

Seattle is located between the Puget Sound & Lake Washington and is 142.5 square miles in size with 58.67 of those miles including the waters of Lake Washington and Lake Union. From Seattle, it is about 111 miles to the Canadian border and 161 miles to the Oregon border.

Seattle is on Elliot Bay which is the home of the Port of Seattle and the Colman Dock. The Colman Dock is the main terminal for Seattle's large state ferry system. From the dock, car and passenger ferries and water taxis sail to Bainbridge Island and Bremerton.

Highways

Interstate 5 (I-5), the major north-south highway which links Seattle to major cities in California, Oregon and Vancouver, BC., bisects the city between west and east. The Interstate 90 (I-90), the major west-east highway, intersects the I-5 in the southern end of downtown Seattle and takes motorists to Bellevue, Issaquah, across Snoqualmie pass to Spokane and eventually to Boston. State Route 520 (SR520) travels west-east and takes motorists across Lake Washington via the world's largest floating bridge to Bellevue and Redmond.

Schools

Seattle Public Schools serve the city with 12 high schools: Ballard, Center, Cleveland, Franklin, Garfield, Ingraham, Hale, Nova, Rainier Beach, Roosevelt, Sealth and West Seattle.

There are also numerous private secular and parochial high schools in the city including Bishop Blanchet, Concordia Lutheran, Holy Names Academy, Lakeside, O'Dea High, Seattle Academy of Arts/Sciences, Seattle Lutheran High, Seattle Waldorf , The Bush School, The Northwest School, Seattle Prep and University Prep

There are quite a few institutions of higher education in Seattle. The University of Washington is a premier research institute and is ranked as one of the top universities in the world. Other four colleges include Antioch University, Seattle Pacific University, Cornish College of the Arts and Seattle University. There are also numerous community and technical colleges within the city.

Sports Teams

Seattle based sports teams include: Seattle Mariners Baseball, Seattle Storm Basketball, Seattle Thunderbirds, and the Seattle Seahawks.
