Burn Injuries
It is estimated that over one million burn injuries occur each year in the United States, many thousands of these occurring in Washington State. According to the Center for Disease Control fire and burns are the fifth leading cause of accidental or preventable death. Approximately 50% of all burns are suffered by children under the age of four years according to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation.
Burns are often caused by an explosion, fire, hot liquids, chemicals, electricity, or sunlight. Burns may result from an accident caused by another person's negligence. This may include premises liability, defective equipment, defective or dangerous products, negligent security, or common law negligence.
Injuries suffered from burns are classified in three ways:
1st-degree burns - affect only the outer layer - the epidermis - of skin and it is the most common type of burn injury. Symptoms are pain, swelling, and blisters and there are no blisters. Sunburn is usually classified as a first-degree burn.
2nd degree burns - affect the superficial (papillary) skin. With a second-degree burn, the skin will be red; there will be a lot of pain and blisters that contain clear fluid.
3rd or 4th-degree burns - affect the skin and underlying tissues and sometimes the fascia, bone, and muscle. While there is no pain with these burns, they the most severe and often cause extensive scarring. They can require lengthy hospitalizations and long recovery times with multiple surgeries.
