Fixed Object Motor Vehicle Accidents

Auto accidents in which a car, truck, or SUV leaves the road or highway and strikes a tree, utility pole, building, traffic barrier, or some other fixed object are some of the most deadly and catastrophic types of motor vehicle accidents. Approximately 20% of all of those people killed in auto accidents were involved in an accident in which the vehicle left the street, roadway, or highway and struck a fixed object.

Factors in Fixed Object Accidents

Nothing is worse than reading about a car full of teenagers running off the road and hitting a tree. Most times when a car goes off a road jumps a curb, goes down an embankment, and ends up striking a tree or light pole, the results are deadly.  Factors in these types of accidents include:

  • alcohol

  • speeding

  • falling asleep

  • inattention or distraction

  • poor visibility

  • inexperience in negotiating turns.

In 2010 alone, 7,272 people died as a result of fixed object motor vehicle accidents. 45% of the drivers involved in these accidents were legally drunk with blood alcohol concentrations at or above 0.08%.  Drivers involved in fixed object motor vehicle accidents are 80% male. 28% of the drivers killed are males younger than the age of 30.

Injuries in Fixed Object Accidents

For those who survive an accident in which a vehicle runs into a tree, pole, or other barrier, injuries can be catastrophic including brain damage, paraplegic injuries, and orthopedic injuries. Victims often sustain injuries requiring surgery and physical therapy and some are permanently disabled.
