Rear-End Car Accidents

A rear-end car accident is a motor vehicle accident in which one vehicle crashes into the rear of a car, truck or SUV. A rear-end car accident is frequently caused by the following driver following too closely -- "tailgating"-- driver distraction such as cell phone usage or adjusting a radio, or when the driver in front makes an abrupt stop, say for a yellow light, which the following driver does not anticipate.

Usually, in a rear-end collision, the driver in the rear vehicle is presumed to be at fault, however, there are exceptions to this rule.

Damages

Sometimes damages to the vehicles involved in a rear-end collision are not that severe; this kind of accident is called a "fender bender." In other cases, say when the following car an SUV or pickup truck hitting a smaller passenger vehicle, the damage to the passenger vehicle can be more pronounced. In this type of accident, where the vehicle bumpers do not match, the shock-absorbing qualities of bumpers do not protect the occupants inside.

Injuries in a Rear-End Car Accident

Often in a rear-end car accident, people suffer whiplash or soft tissue injuries even in the case of a fender bender. Whiplash is a descriptive term to describe a hyperflexion/hyperextension injury in which the head snaps forward and back from the impact of the crash. Because the head's movement is greater than the neck's normal range of motion, injury can occur to the neck as muscles are ripped, stretched, and torn.

People do not always realize they have suffered an injury at the car accident scene. Most drivers are in shock and feel battered after an accident, but they may not realize the extent of their injuries at the time. With a whiplash injury, symptoms can increase over time and the neck can stiffen. If the pain does not resolve after treatment with ice and heat and wearing a cervical collar, physical therapy may be required.

In some cases, the injured person may have a serious and debilitating injury that leaves them in chronic pain and with restricted head movement.

Claims for whiplash injuries can sometimes be problematic because it is an injury that does not always show up on x-rays. Insurance companies often fight whiplash claims because they can and they may have the attitude that because the car was not totaled then how could the passenger have a severe injury.
